  20. Thank you for your **VERY** timely responses.  I just today bit on one
  21. of these RPI modems myself, and it took me most of the day to figure
  22. out what I have.  The RPI bit is hidden out on the back of the box:
  23. "*Error Control*  V.42 and MNP RPI software," and "*Data Compression*
  24. V.42bis RPI software."  The box design is such that, unless you happen
  25. to already know what RPI is, you think you're getting a modem with MNP/
  26. V.42 LAPM/V.42.bis compression built in.  Truely deceptive.  I had to
  27. 1) install the modem in my PC (I hope that doesn't invalidate the 30
  28. day return policy of the place I bought it from!), 2) study the owner's
  29. manual and the Comit (comm program bundled with the modem) manual, and
  30. 3) spend some time in comp.dcom.modems before I realized what's going
  31. on.

  33. I was also about to ask about Kermit support for RPI modems (until I
  34. saw this thread), but with a difference:  In comp.dcom.modems, I
  35. noticed some mention of RPI drivers (loaded from config.sys as device
  36. drivers, or as TSR's?), which supposedly can be used with any comm
  37. package.  I was going to ask where such drivers could be found, and if
  38. they would be compaible with Kermit.  That's what I *was* going to do. 
  39. Now, I think I'll see if I can just return the cheezy thing, and inquire
  40. about the package, too.  This isn't my first experience with Rockwell
  41. (they make power tools, too)... :-/
